Who is Narendra Modi?

Vadnagar in Gujarat is where Narendra Modi was born, in 1950. He organised for the Hindu nationalist RSS prior to joining the BJP. From October 2001 until 2014 he served as Chief Minister of Gujarat. The BJP won a parliamentary majority under his leadership in 2014, then won again in 2019. By 2024 the BJP could not reach a majority by itself, so Modi took the oath for a third term leading the National Democratic Alliance coalition. On 7 October 2026 he reached 25 years leading a government, counting from the day he first took the oath as Gujarat Chief Minister.

Previously: Member of the Lok Sabha for Varanasi (since 2014) · Chief Minister of Gujarat (2001-2014) · General Secretary of the BJP (1998-2001)

Record

Supporters give him credit for building infrastructure, welfare schemes paid out digitally, three election wins in a row and raising India's international profile. Critics point to protests over the citizenship law, demonetisation and what it cost the economy, anti-terror legislation used against journalists and activists, and how the Muslim minority has been treated. India's Supreme Court threw out, in 2022, a petition against the clearance that a special investigation team had given him concerning the 2002 Gujarat riots.

Coalition partners kept the BJP in power in 2024, when it lost its majority on its own. Weeks of youth-led protests in July 2026, sparked by leaked medical entrance exam papers, ended once Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned and the government accepted the protesters' main demands.
