Who is Sanae Takaichi?
Sanae Takaichi was born in 1961 and has sat in the Diet since the 1990s. She held several posts under Shinzo Abe, including internal affairs minister, and later served as the minister in charge of economic security. Her Liberal Democrats and their partner, the Japan Innovation Party, then went to the voters in a snap election on 8 February 2026, and her party won a two-thirds majority in the 465-seat lower house. She was reappointed on 18 February. Her coalition still lacks a majority in the upper house.

Record
After Takaichi suggested in November 2025 that Japan could respond militarily if China attacked Taiwan, Beijing responded with diplomatic and economic retaliation, according to AP. Her cabinet reshuffle on 17 September 2026 kept many key ministers; polls that month put approval between 44% and 62% across eight outlets, and large majorities opposed giving senior posts to lawmakers who had misreported political funding. The October 2026 speech also welcomed progress on the National Referendum Act amendment toward constitutional reform.
Supporters credit her with a firmer security posture and a mandate to act on prices and growth. Critics, including experts quoted by AP, say the anti-espionage law could undermine civil rights, and that the food tax cut could worsen inflation and slow debt reduction.
