The portraits of historical figures and current politicians come from Wikimedia Commons. We only use images in the public domain or released under CC0, CC BY or CC BY-SA, and we credit every one here.

How we treat the images
Each portrait is cropped to a square and converted to grayscale. Those are changes to the original file. On the site the grayscale image is shown over a red or pink background with a colour blend, which does not change the file itself. Where an original is licensed CC BY-SA, our version is shared under the same license and version; where it is CC BY, the author credit below applies to our version too. Public domain and CC0 images carry no conditions, but we credit them anyway.
People without a freely licensed image show their initials instead. If you hold the rights to a better portrait, or see a wrong credit, write to .
