Who was Samora Machel?
Samora Machel was born in 1933 in Gaza Province and worked as a nurse before joining the Mozambique Liberation Front, FRELIMO, in 1962. After military training abroad he led its first guerrilla attack in 1964, took command of the army and became party president in 1970 after Eduardo Mondlane was killed. Mozambique became independent on 25 June 1975, and he was its first president. He led the country through civil war with the RENAMO rebels. On 19 October 1986 his presidential plane crashed in the Lebombo Mountains in South Africa, killing him and 24 others.

Legacy
Admirers honor Machel as the leader who won independence, opened schools and clinics to ordinary people and gave refuge to fighters against white minority rule. Critics point to a one-party state, sweeping nationalizations that the war then undermined, and the death penalty with public executions in 1979. The Nkomati Accord is judged differently: some call it a forced compromise, and South Africa did not keep its side. Most Mozambicans believe apartheid South Africa caused the crash that killed him, but no conclusive evidence has emerged.
