Legacy

Admirers honor Machel as the leader who won independence, opened schools and clinics to ordinary people and gave refuge to fighters against white minority rule. Critics point to a one-party state, sweeping nationalizations that the war then undermined, and the death penalty with public executions in 1979. The Nkomati Accord is judged differently: some call it a forced compromise, and South Africa did not keep its side. Most Mozambicans believe apartheid South Africa caused the crash that killed him, but no conclusive evidence has emerged.
