Where they stand

The 12 axes, axis by axis

  1. 01Ownership+45
    PublicPrivate

The June 2022 Eletrobras capitalisation ended the federal government's control of the power company. That scores toward private ownership.

  2. 02Markets+45
    PlannedFree

His economic agenda favoured privatisation and fiscal adjustment, while the Auxílio Brasil top-up pulled the other way. The score is moderately free-market.

  3. 03Welfare+10
    SharedSelf-reliant

His 2022 platform kept Auxílio Brasil at R$ 600, a sizeable cash transfer, so the score is close to centre despite his pension overhaul and market lean.

  4. 04Authority+65
    DemocraticStrong leader

The Supreme Court convicted him of attempting a coup and attempting to abolish the democratic rule of law. He denies wrongdoing and his defence seeks a review. The score reflects the court's findings and the contested record.

  5. 05Security+80
    LibertyOrder

His governments loosened gun rules and his platform calls firearms access a factor in public security. That scores strongly toward order.

  6. 06StructureNo clear record
    LocalCentral
  7. 07Morality+85
    ProgressiveTraditional

His platform speaks of 'Deus, pátria, família, vida e liberdade' and of protecting citizens through traditional values.

  8. 08Religion+60
    SecularReligious

The same platform places God first among its values. The score leans religious.

  9. 09TechnologyNo clear record

  11. 11TradeNo clear record
    GlobalProtected
  12. 12Foreign policy+35
    CooperationStrength

His 2022 platform framed partnerships abroad as a way to create jobs and diversify exports, which does not point strongly either way. The score is mildly toward strength.

4 axes have no clear record: no documented statement, vote or platform places Jair Bolsonaro there, so matching leaves them out.

Who is Jair Bolsonaro?

Jair Bolsonaro, born in 1955, was an army captain and then a federal deputy for Rio de Janeiro for nearly three decades before winning the presidency in 2018. His term ran from 2019 to 2022, and he lost the 2022 runoff to Lula. His party, the PL, ran his son Flávio Bolsonaro as its presidential candidate in 2026, and Lula won the 25 October runoff. Jair himself was not on the ballot: on 11 September 2025 the First Panel of the Supreme Federal Court convicted him in the coup plot case, and the conviction became final in late November 2025. He is serving the sentence in house arrest under Justice Alexandre de Moraes.

Record

His government pushed privatisation, with the Eletrobras sale the largest, and eased gun access by decree, and Congress passed the pension overhaul in 2019. In 2022 the platform for a second term kept the R$ 600 income transfer.

The legal outcome is precise. The sentence is 27 years and 3 months, imposed on 11 September 2025 and final in late November 2025. He was held in preventive detention from 22 November 2025, moved to the Papudinha unit in January 2026, and placed in house arrest on 24 March 2026. A request to annul the conviction, filed on 12 May 2026 and assigned to Justice Nunes Marques, was pending as of late June 2026.

Supporters credit his government with market-oriented reforms and gun rights. Critics, and the court that convicted him, point to the coup plot case.
