  3. 03Welfare-35
    SharedSelf-reliant

His first budget, presented 19 October 2026, doubles family allowances from 2027, raises the minimum pension fourfold to HUF 120,000, keeps the 13th-month pension and adds a pensioners' card and healthcare spending of HUF 510 billion more. Income tax on the minimum wage falls to 9 percent. A deficit-cutting target tempers it, so the score is moderately toward shared provision.

  4. 04Authority-40
    DemocraticStrong leader

He ended the decree-based state of emergency, reset ties with Brussels and is pursuing corruption cases, and he agreed to have his own immunity lifted. But his two-thirds majority has been used to remove a president, constitutional judges and officials, which Fidesz calls an attack on democracy. Scored toward democratic with that caveat.

  5. 05Security-30
    LibertyOrder

Ending the wartime emergency rule and closing the Sovereignty Protection Office point toward liberty, while his government keeps a firm line on borders and the asylum fines.

  7. 07Morality-35
    ProgressiveTraditional

His government cut the Orbán-era ban on promoting homosexuality to minors from the child protection law and allowed Pride, and is considering the adoption law. But he frames the change as alignment with EU rules and has not gone further on marriage. Moderately toward progressive.

He pledged to end dependence on Russian energy by 2035 and to explore small modular reactors, a mild lean to embrace on a thin basis. Low confidence.

He says Hungary and Czechia hold similar positions on migration and has called the EU's daily fine over asylum rules unfair. Moderately toward national identity.

He is rebuilding ties with the EU and NATO and expelled Russian diplomats, but he sets conditions on Ukraine's EU path tied to Hungarian minority rights and supports the Visegrád Group.

Who is Péter Magyar?

Péter Magyar was little known in Hungarian politics until early 2024, when he fell out publicly with Viktor Orbán's Fidesz party, where he had been a prominent member. He built the Tisza Party into the main opposition force. At the 12 April 2026 election Tisza won a two-thirds majority, 141 of 199 seats, ending Orbán's 16 years in power. Magyar was sworn in on 9 May 2026. He aims to restore ties with the EU and NATO, unlock frozen EU funds and revive the economy. In October 2026 he hosted EU leaders for the 70th anniversary of the 1956 uprising and a July poll put Tisza at 58 percent against Fidesz at 20.

Previously: Leader of the Tisza Party · Former member of Fidesz

Record

His government has removed President Tamás Sulyok through a constitutional amendment and had parliament elect former judge András Baka in August 2026. It also closed the Sovereignty Protection Office, shut down the state broadcaster MTVA and passed a law capping prime ministers at eight years. Hungary agreed to join the European Public Prosecutor's Office. The European Commission called the reforms a radical change in its July rule-of-law report, while Fidesz calls them an attack on democracy and Marine Le Pen and Matteo Salvini criticised a server seizure. On 28 September 2026 parliament lifted his own immunity at his request so prosecutors could investigate a theft allegation from a June 2024 incident. He called the case a sham, and no charges have been reported.

Supporters credit him with ending Orbán-era corruption and unlocking EU funds. Critics charge that he is using his supermajority to purge opponents.
